Longship in Schools & Museums

Longship has built a nationally known reputation as being one of the leading specialists in bringing Saxon & Viking living history displays into schools. Our visits are designed to relate to the history national curriculum, which states pupils should have opportunities to study the reasons why people came to Britain, and to learn about their way of life, and their impact on the people they encountered and conquered. We achieve this by allowing the children to see, touch, smell and wear a wide range of period artifact both real and reproduction, and through engaging the children in role play, games and demonstrations of various period crafts.
Display of period Items You will spend the day in the company of
ERIK ERIKSSON
Fearsome Warrior, Trader, Story Teller
& Sometime Blacksmith
Erik starts the day with an introduction to who he is where he comes from and the clothes he wears. The morning includes a chance for all the children to look at touch, try on and smell the huge range of superb and highly acurate artefacts he brings into your school, including farming equipment, trade items, spinning & weaving, leather and bone work Jewllery, not just the ordinary day to day things but some rare and sinister items as well things that will suprise and amaze both children and teachers alike, this is followed by an interactive question and answer session. the morning finishes with demonstration of coin making using role-play and time permitting by a pre-Christian story of the Creation ...... Not for the faint hearted !

Please Note Erik is used to working in schools wher the hall is used at dinner times, which is why his artefacts are spilt in to two lots some for the morning and some for the afternoon. This requires the morning's artefacts to be packed away and returned to his vehicle normally with the aid of some strong sensible willing slaves! (children)  After Lunch
Begining with a talk about what type of food would have been eaten. The children will participate in a village meeting ( Motte-Saxon / Thing-Viking ). During this meeting we will look at three types of trial: Trial by Worth, Trial by Ordeal and Trial by Combat during which several children will take part, following any trial must come the punishment and the children will witness punishment in action.
